An alarming number of people pass right by this rather clear “road closed” sign rather than taking the side road, as if somehow believing that it doesn’t apply to them. Then, ignoring the three bright orange “road closed” signs as well, must make it all the way to the barricade and see the giant land moving equipment in the middle of the road before they can be bothered to turn around, usually revving their engines in protest. When there is a road closed sign, THIS MEANS YOU people!

But the road can’t be closed, my GPS said to go this way!

Hard to tell, but that “road closed” sign looks like it’s on the shoulder? I’m used to seeing them actually blocking the road, leaving just enough room to get around for “local traffic only”.

Love those people. Especially when they finally realize that yes, the road is closed and no, you can’t simply cut through the construction zone and you see the saddest look on their face like it was the only possible way to go.....

True. I’m convinced though that as fast as people are flying by it without taking notice, if it was in the center someone would have plowed through it by now.

Sometimes I see them centered, but usually they’re just blocking the lane going towards the construction. Either way, they are not only trying to allow for locals to access their own driveways, but they’re also leaving some room for their big trucks to get through. That’s the whole point anyway. “Local” has a very narrow definition here.

Ya it might be the “local traffic only” that’s throwing them off. “Well I’M from this state!” they think to themselves as they decide the sign is making an exception for them.

Here’s the only thing I remember from PSYCH101 in uni: the problem in this scenario does not lie with the drivers if the majority of the population is getting it ‘wrong’. The signage needs to change.

Just yesterday I was biking home and my path had a “Trail Closed” sign off to the side. It was very ambiguous... wasn’t on the trail, but still faced it... had I turned around I would have had a significant detour. The trail was perfectly fine.

I’ll buy that.

But I also attribute it to people’s lack of attention while driving. As I left the house and made my way towards that side road myself today I could clearly see the giant barricade across the road from far away, but by the time I got to the road closed sign itself a slight incline in the road surface obscured my view. So my theory is that people that are paying attention to the road up ahead see that there’s no alternative but to turn, while people that are not paying attention wait until they’re at the sign already to decide and most take the chance that there’s a way through.
